Abstract (English)This monograph/exhibition catalogue focuses on the idea and image of the cyborg (“a person whose physical abilities are augmented and extended by machine technology”), as it pertains to Freud’s notion of the “uncanny.” Historical and contemporary texts, images and objects trace the evolution of the cyborg figure in visual art, popular culture, science, literature, medicine and cultural theory. Topics discussed include: film (F. Lang’s “Metropolis”, Japanimation), psychological case studies (B. Bettelheim), early photography (E. Muybridge), specific artists’ works (from Picabia to Mariko Mori), the automaton, Techno-Orientalism and cyberfeminism. Biographical notes on authors and contributors. Circa 100 bibl. ref.
