Abstract (English)

Shanken introduces this collection of Ascott’s essays on art, technology, and consciousness by situating the artist and educator in the history of ideas and elucidating the social and theoretical aspects of his work. The essays chart the evolution of Ascott’s ideas, pedagogy and artmaking over three decades. Shanken claims Ascott’s utopian conception of “telematics” provides a positive, communitarian alternative to military and commercial applications of new technologies. Index. Biographical notes.
