Abstract (English)"Erin Shirreff: Available Light is the first solo exhibition in Canada of this Canadian artist based in New York City, whose recent achievements in video, photography and sculpture have generated a buzz of critical recognition. Shirreff’s conceptually rich work fuses rigorously refined technique with a lush sense of history. Investigation of light and form unites her approach to different media. In this exhibition video works such as Ansel Adams, RCA Building, circa 1940 (2009), Moon (2010) and UN2010 (2010) stage hypnotic evocations of the passage of time rendered through iconic subjects. Her cast sculptures are shell-like forms conjuring the staid volumes of minimalist sculpture: with razor-sharp aesthetic acuity, Shirreff plays on the genre’s inherent theatricality and amplifies its paradoxical dependence on photographic reproduction for circulation in the wider culture. And her elegant photographic series, including the stately Monograph (no. 1) (2011), extend the archaeology of perception fundamental to her practice" -- Publisher's web site.
