Contemporary Traditional Chinese PaintingTools Lee, Roger. Contemporary Traditional Chinese Painting. Regina, Sask.: Mackenzie Art Gallery, 1988.
Abstract (English)Catalogue of 41 works from the City of Jinan, Shandong Province (twin city of Regina). Lee's essay discusses the difference between Western and Eastern aesthetic values vis-à-vis mimesis and illusion and the relationship of Chinese painting to its origins in calligraphy and brushed line. Nature is achieved through the action of painting itself and subsequently manifested in the finished work rather than simply duplicated through verisimilitude. Regional characteristics and influences are discussed including Russian social realism along with the cultural renaissance taking place in China today.
