Abstract (English)

" Working primarily from memory, his paintings are less a document of the land and more of the human psyche expressed through the language of the landscape. The Phenomenology of Dusk explores that magic period when day transforms into night. In twilight, birds and insects of the day roost in the boughs of a pine tree as the creatures of the night awake and set out into the dark. It is the intersection between light and dark, the known and the unknown, the conscious and the subconscious and where imagination takes flight. Using oil paint on panel, Leong illustrates this haphazard ballet of flora and fauna as if a lucid dream. In doing so he blurs the line between the experience of nature and the nature of being in pursuit of a poetic metaphor for looking within as opposed to without. " -- Editor's website.
