Abstract (English)

"'Sale(ish) Culture', the title of an exhibition held at Two Rivers Gallery in 2009, is a play on words. 'Saleish' conflates 'Salish' and 'sale', indicating the artist's notion that Salish culture is a commodity. Similar word play is found throughout the exhibition by Coast Salish artist Leslie Sam, who uses his decolonized artist's name, lessLIE. His use of word play is an integral element that works in tandem with his paintings and prints to amplify underlying concepts rooted in the artist's critical view of the world around him." -- p. [1].
