Julian SchnabelTools Barzel, Amnon; Schnabel, Julian; McEvilley, Thomas; Gaddis, William. Julian Schnabel. Prato, Italy: Centro per l'Arte Contemporanea Luigi Pecci, 1989.
Abstract (English)Three essays on Schnabel focus on his work, his use of fragmentation and his relation to art history. Defining the artist's use of materials as anti-heroic, Barzel describes Schnabel's paintings and the sources of his images. McEvilley outlines 19th century romantic notions of history and the heroic as they have permeated modernism. Noting postmodernism's critique of history and the heroic, McEvilley places Schnabel's work, and neo-expressionism, between these two points of view. Artist's statement. Biographical notes.
