Abstract (English)

"This exhibit represents a discovery of that which is completely new, but which has been present all along. The Hispanic presence in the United States, presently estimated at more than 18 million persons, is growin at a significant rate. As it grows, it supports a cultural and artistic renaissance and heritage which predates the existence of the United States by over two hundred years.

The exhibit entitled ANCIENT ROOTS / NEW VISIONS, illustrates the deep concern of the participating artists with the dynamics of their past and present cultures. The work reflects the tremendous vitality and diversityof these artists in four thematic categories: pre-Columbian roots and rituals; 'santo retablo,' and folk art traditions; art of the barrio and political art; and inner vision, avant-garde, and international currents." -- Page 4 of document
