Arthur SchillingTools Podedworny, Carol. Arthur Schilling. Thunder Bay, Ont.: Thunder Bay Art Gallery, 1986.
Abstract (English)Called an early innovator in the history of Canadian Native Art, Ojibwa artist Shilling died in 1986 leaving an extensive body of portraits, landscape paintings and drawings. It is through portraits, especially selfportraits, that Schilling's formal and conceptual evolution is made evident in this exhibition. Podedworny's analysis incorporates Western art historical method and an account of the artist's Anishnabe ancestry, painters of the Woodland School, and Ojibwa spiritualism and symbology. Biographical notes. Bibl. 3 p.
