Three essayists deal with ideas and Cherokee background differently: Camnitzer places the artist's personal and professional history in the context of the colonization of the Americas; Fisher discusses the "Indianness" of his installations and his role as an archivist; Lippard's text acknowledges Native American contemporary culture as a context, but goes on to assess the phases of his unique production in detail.
