Reading Dancing : Bodies and Subjects in Contemporary American DanceTools Foster, Susan Leigh. Reading Dancing : Bodies and Subjects in Contemporary American Dance. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1986.
Abstract (English)Posing the question of "how dance means what it does", Foster uses post-structuralist criticism to "de-naturalize" the body, the subject, and the expressive act. She compares the codes and conventions of work used by choreographers throughout the history of dance and looks at recent work that uses a multi-disciplinary approach to examine how the body accrues meaning.
