Abstract (English)

In discussing Gerlinger's drawings produced between 1985 and 1987, Windrum looks at the artist's use of the traditional still-life genre; familiar objects in ambiguous contexts point to meaning beyond the scene represented. Thus the different representations of fish and vessels are interpreted in psychoanalytic terms, their relationship on paper setting up a challenge to traditional sexual mythology. The author draws a parallel with Canadian landscape painting, referring to the works as landscapes of daily experience and contemporary angst. Biographical notes.
