Abstract (English)Anthology containing 11 essays by Gagnon (originally published between 1990 and 1997) on issues of race and cultural difference in Canadian art production. In her introduction, the author refers to the cultural movement of the 1980s and 1990s which has inspired her writings, and to the “double bind of cultural race politics.” She mentions identity and representation as key terms in the discussion and draws attention to a number of “markers” which are not developed in the selected texts. Includes a study of D. Claxton’s video installations; an account of Canadian anti-racist initiatives in the arts (1989-1994); letters to J. Hassan concerning the 1993 annual general meeting of the Association of National Non-Profit Artists’ Centres (ANNPAC); a discussion of East Asian Canadian video production; a commentary on the 1993 Kamloops Art Gallery exhibition “Dual Cultures;” an analysis of S. Mootoo’s photocopy works (1991-1994); and essays on J. Hassan’s and P. Wong’s work. Also includes three short “lexicons.” List of artists and works reproduced. Filmography/videography 2 p. Bibliography 6 p. Index 4 p.
