Abstract (English)This catalogue for an exhibition focusing on Godwin’s “Tartan” paintings from 1967-76, includes an excerpt from the artist’s unpublished memoirs and interpretive essays by Oko and Davis. Godwin’s text discusses the following topics: the technical problems he faced when introduced to acrylics in the 1960s; his experiences teaching; the importance of his visits to Greece, Expo 67 and New York; and the impact of social/cultural events taking place in Canada throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Oko’s essay on the artist’s recent landscape paintings touches on subjects of Zen Buddhism, modernist abstraction and the artist’s love of fly-fishing. Numerous references are made to Godwin’s association with R. Bloore, the Regina Five and the Emma Lake workshops. Davis’s analysis of Godwin’s paintings focuses on the influence of Olitski, Newman, Cage and Taoism. The artist’s interest in concepts of order, chaos, indeterminacy and chance are also discussed. List of works. Biographical notes. Circa 110 bibl. ref.
