Abstract (English)"In today's realm of culture-as-commerce, our lives are increasingly shaped by the global marketplace and international economics. Artist Hiram To explores identity as it is linked to consumption and popular trends. Hiram To approaches identity as individual or collective performances in which we define, present and alter ourselves in multiple spheres of social interaction and cultural production. These spheres include race, sexuality, work and leisure. In our current era of mass-marketing, anyone can construct a self-image by choosing from an endless array of lifestyle options. To’s artwork asks : How do we present ourselves in our private and public lives ? How do our material possessions, fashion choices and social affinities reflect our values and beliefs? To embraces the human obsession with appearance and desire. While he highlights how we identify with media images and icons, he also wonders : Just how much do we look beyond appearance?" -- p.
