Abstract (English)

Fenton outlines a history of painting since the Renaissance focusing on the impact of oil paint and the ways by which modernist abstraction resolved the contradiction between the linear and the painterly. The characteristics and impact of acrylic paint are described and Olitski's use of materials and methods in this medium are summerized. 5 bibl. ref.
