Abstract (English)

"Throughout his many plays, Henrik Ibsen characteristically made use of stage directions to precisely, and often extensively, describe the setting of each scene. Domestic spaces in particular are outlined in careful detail; the attributes and location of each window, sofa, table, chair, and lamp are specified.

Figuring most prominently in these descriptions are doors – Ibsen’s complete dramatic works feature 102 physical doors of varying stature, function, placement, and composition. No other objects so closely align, arguably, to the psyches of Ibsen’s characters and the interplay between them.

This publication presents each door from every play in chronological order." -- [Inside cover]
