Abstract (English)

Examining the origins and evolution of Pop Art in America, Great Britain, and continental Europe, the authors analyze the ambivalent features of the movement, showing how references to consumer society and to the mass media redefined the work of art during the 1960s. Texts focus on the Nouveau Réalisme, the Fluxus movement, and the influence of Pop Art on the art of the 1980s. Includes a chronology of notable events (1951-1992) and numerous reprinted texts by, criticism of, and interviews with artists. Biographical notes on 61 artists. Circa 200 bibl. ref.
