Abstract (English)

The American curator McShine introduces this book-length study of two and one half decades of art made in West Berlin by 54 German and international artists. Among the seven essays included, Willett writes on pre-1939 20th century Berlin-based art, with the rise of Nazism and consequent decline of artistic expression. Schmied attemps a history of post-1945 West Berlin Art to 1970, from rubble to student radicalism. Includes a chronology, an index of artists' names, and biographical notes. Circa 100 bibl. ref.
