Abstract (English)

Reiss’s book examines the rise of Installation Art from its marginal and counter-cultural beginnings in the Art Environments of the 1950s to its acceptance as a commonplace exhibition practice by art institutions in the 1990s. Limiting her scope mainly to New York, Reiss focuses on a few major artists and their critical reception, underscoring the provocative intent of the artists and assessing what impact, if any, the art had on the institutions it attempted to transform.
